Please note: Helmets are required for ALL rides listed. Also, for your safety and enjoyment, please make sure that your bicycle is in good mechanical condition.Local Stuff
Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Weekly road rides depart from Lifestyles Fitness Center in Downtown Dover, next to Kent General Hospital on Governors Avenue. The ride is usually 3 hours and sometimes more, going for 40 to as much as 90 miles. Usually the 90 mile rides are unintentional, but they have happened on a couple of occasions. Pace is dictated by the group and no one gets left behind. Stops are not planned on many rides, but we will stop whenever anybody feels like they need to. Usually there are plenty of opportunities for fast sprints and paceline work. We are not a club, there are no dues and no meetings. We are just a small group of friends that enjoy riding and we would love to have anybody that is interested in coming along.
Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday- A large group of cyclists leaves the Bayhealth Cancer Center on Tuesday afternoons at 5:30 p.m. for a 36 mile MS 150 training ride. This is usually a big group, with any combination of the same core group showing up each week. Due to the number of people that show, paceline protocol is strictly enforced. The ride normally takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours, including a stop at a predetermined spot for refreshing or relieving one's self.
Thursday at 5:30. From a friends house, we depart for a medium to high intensity ride. While it is not the intention of this ride to leave anyone behind, we have found that on occasion, some people prefer to be left behind so that they may spin in at a more comfortable pace for themselves. This is a TRAINING ride. If you are serious about wanting to get stronger and go faster, then this is where you want to be. *WARNING* You will be encouraged, cajoled, extolled, pushed, lied to, and maybe even left behind once in awhile. You may experience discomfort, fatigue, pain, nausea and even some frustration. *NOTICE* It will all be worth it by the end of the season when you are stronger, faster and fitter than you have ever been before. If you are interested, e-mail me at the address below for the meeting point.
Stay tuned to this page for more info on local road rides as it develops. If you participate in a ride and are looking for more people to join you, e-mail me and I'll spread the word.
-Sunday, June 20, Betterton Beach MD. Another of my personal favorites. I did this ride for the first time last year and can't wait to do it again! Boasting some of the nicest scenery and best riding around. With the multitude of mileage options, there's bound to be one for you. You can do 27, 50,78,86 or 104 miles. The routes are color coded, so be sure to take note of which is which. Two great features of this ride are the beach itself, so you can take a dip after you're done riding, and the Maryland Professional Sports Massage Team. For a $15 fee, you can get a post ride massage. All rides begin and end at Betterton Beach, registration is from 6:30 a.m.( WOW) to 9:00 a.m. Rides start at 7:00a.m. with a special tandem start at8:00 a.m. Last sweep is at 5:00 p.m. and rides end at 6:00 p.m. I'm not sure what happens if you continue to ride after that, but I suppose you could try it and find out. Cost is $15 until June 1, then $20 after. Fee includes: map, marked route (very important on this ride), "Strobe Safety Blinker" (first 600 riders), sag wagon, and several food stops. Checks go to Chestertown Lion's Club, proceeds benefit the Leader Dog for the Blind program, all blind riders may ride free, seriously, that's what it says. You'll have to tell them though, since they can't read it. For more info contact Bay to Bay Ride, c/o Jim Gent, 7 Cedar Chase Court, Chestertown, MD 21620-1655, Phone 410-778-4881.
5th Annual West Wicomico Watermelon Ride (and seed spitting contest) - Saturday, September 11,Pemberton Historical Park, Salisbury, MD. With a name like this, this had better be fun. It certainly sounds like it could very well be. I can't say since I've never ridden it, but I can give them the benefit of the doubt. Registration is from 8 AM to10 AM and cost is $25. Limited to 500 riders. Mileage options are 32, 50 or 62 miles. Registration fee includes map, cue sheet, marked route, sag, rest stops, T-shirt, lunch and entertainment. For more info: Wicomico County Dept of Recreation and Parks, Monday - Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, (410)548-4900 ext. 116. E-mail cseelaus@wicomico.org.
For More local rides of the organized and/or fund raising variety, check out my new "News and Notices" section. It contains links to rides that have their own web pages. If for some strange reason you enjoy my editorial comments, don't worry, I'll still be doing reviews of the rides that I participate in. Which so far this year, hasn't happened.
